In 2010 my new friend Roman Ward (nee Wisniewski) asked me
to look at the journal his mother kept during their six-year
odyssey of dodging the Nazis, Polish bounty hunters, neo-Nazis and
G.I. bigots during and in the aftermath of World War II.
Roman had promised his mother, Jadwiga, on her deathbed that
he would have her journal published in his lifetime. Three writers
had attempted to make a book of her journals but Roman felt all had
failed utterly. I would learn that Roman himself had never read his
mother’s writing and, like many Jews who survived the Holocaust,
Roman and Jadwiga had never even talked about the dangers they
faced, the horrors they witnessed or the loss of over a hundred family
members.
Reading the journal made it obvious why the other writers had
disappointed Roman The best story was his. In fifty years as a working
journalist it is the most astonishing personal narrative I have ever
heard; how a 12-year-old boy was entrusted by his father with saving
his older sister and mother. “You are the only one who will survive
this war,” Roman’s father told him in the Polish ghetto before Roman
fled wearing a Hitler Youth uniform.
This then is the story of Roman Ward from his birth in Poland,
through the War and DP camps, through his service in the fledgling
Israeli Air Force to finally reuniting with his mother in America. He
has honored his promise to his mother; each chapter begins with her
account of what happened and the book is filled with her accounts
wherever Roman could confirm and expand them.
It’s a true and amazing story.

What a wonderful tribute to your family, keeping the promise to your mother. Very good book! Loved it!!!!
It was a riveting account of the Holocaust through the eyes of a child. It was extremely well written. I couldn't put it down.
A Holocaust book that against the odds has humorous undertones starting with the title. It's an epic story of how a ten year old Polish Jew who overcame insurmountable odds fighting the Nazis and went on to help establish the State of Israel.
I've known Mr. Feldinger for.. well, a lot of years. He's been an investigative journalist of the highest caliber all his life and his collaboration on this amazing story only makes it more startling, more poignant.. great work!!
In the first place, my guiding critical principle is that any book with a Sten gun on the cover has to be all right. In this case, I was right Feldinger captures perfectly the child's voice in near-apprehension of the horrors, along long with a mordant strain of black humor new to the genre of Holocaust memoirs. Roman Ward live a fantastic life, and it's a pleasure to share it with him if only for a few hundred words.
I was tremendously moved by this account of the Holocaust. This young boy lost so much and still he overcame unbelievable odds. He was a hero at a very young age.
The book is well written. It was a great read. I had a hard time putting it down. It really takes you back to WWII and the experiences of Roman Wisniewski and his family. I came to care very much about them.
I highly recommend this book.
Absolutely AMAZING read! Mr. Ward's courage, strength and bravery are at levels that I cannot even imagine. Heartbreaking. Gut Wrenching, Enlightening. I never come back to write reviews but this was a MUST. I have severe anxiety and struggle focusing on my favorite thing reading. This book broke that awful spell! Thank you Mr. Ward and I'm sorry you had to go through what you did. I do want to hear the "that's another story." Can we have a follow up!? )
