Can a woman who has given up on true love find it with a man who fears it?As Anne Lyons fumes while waiting in traffic on a refreshingly cool July morning in Pittsburgh, she glances out her car's window and observes that the day is so clear, you can almost see into the future. Little does Anne know how prescient she is for she is about to meet her destiny.Anne, who has recently been fired from her nursing position at a nearby hospital due to a flare up of her explosive temper, has been contracted as a private-duty nurse to care for Peg McMaster, an elderly spitfire who has recently been released from the hospital following heart surgery. The only complication--Peg's handsome son, Gerry "Mac" McMaster, who is one of the city's most eligible bachelors and the proprietor of Mac's Place, a popular night spot. His flirtations and charm unnerve Anne and his good looks, especially his gas-flame blue eyes, ignite something in Anne-something that disturbs her.Peg perks up when she is introduced to her new nurse. The old woman has been praying to St. Anne, the patron saint of housewives, to find a suitable wife for her playboy son before she dies, and she believes that Anne's arrival on the Feast of St. Anne, is the answer to her prayers. Peg and her friend Irma begin scheming to bring Anne and Gerry together, much to the chagrin of Gerry's current lover, the imperious Claudia. Anne bears terrible scars from a previous relationship, and she sees many of her former lover's traits in Gerry. The last type of man Anne wants to become involved with is another womanizer. As for Gerry, he has vowed never to settle down. Initially, Anne and Gerry clash, but when she finds herself, against her better judgment, falling in love with him, she is disturbed. Can she get beyond her hurt? Can she trust him with her heart? Can a man like Gerry, who goes through lovers faster than a premenstrual woman goes through chocolates, ever be serious about a woman?A romantic dramedy, St. Anne's Day, with its ensemble of memorable characters--Anne's fastidious mother, Grace; push-over father, Bill; and free-spirited roommate, Janetta--can be likened to Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew meets the TV sitcom Cheers. Readers have described it as spirited, sparkling and sassy. While hysterically funny, St. Anne's Day is also heartwarming and inspirational and will leave you cheering when Anne Lyon's day finally arrives.

When I got to the end of this one, I didn't cheer at the (mostly) happy ending or sigh at the poignant part. I just felt relieved that it was over and a little annoyed with myself for sticking with it when I knew I'd just be glad when it was over. The writing wasn't too bad and there was a bit of action mixed in with the romance. So why didn't I get sucked in? I strongly disliked all of the characters, particularly the main couple. We are introduced to a hot headed woman who nearly hits a complete stranger for no good reason (as if there's ever a good reason for violence) and an almost 40 year old womanizer who still thinks getting married would ruin his life. How could I possibly root for these people? And they didn't improve as their story unfolded.

I also want to point out that this book should not be listed under religious fiction (which is where I found it). The author and her characters swear profusely and though there isn't any sex per se, there are a few scenes that I would describe as explicit foreplay. I was interested to read this since Catholic characters seem underrepresented in Christian fiction, but these characters are Catholic in name only. I was especially disappointed in the supposedly devout older woman who swears and belittles people while holding a rosary and in general appears to have a very superficial understanding of the faith. Anyone who picks this up expecting Christian characters will be disappointed at best and possibly offended. I'm not opposed to characters who have realistic faults, but these characters are not even trying.

St Anne Day Janice Lane Palko 9780615662244 Books Reviews

This was a Christian romance. It was not heavy on religion, just expressed the character's beliefs. The hero is running the family owned bar for his mother. She has recently had heart surgery. A nurse is hired to take care of the mother and that is where the story is centered. Lots of extra characters that are interesting and play a good role in the story. There were lots of issues to work thru which the characters seem to do with help from family and friends. Over all, I liked the story and enjoyed the book. I would recommend it.
St Anne's Day is a book with an identity crisis. Is it serious women's fiction? Is it a typical romance novel? Is it a Christian/Catholic novel? It's a little of all three, and that's it's biggest problem. On the one hand, most of the characters practice their faith in various degrees, but on the other hand, it was too spicy to rate as clean Christian fiction. Parts of it were as predictable as a 1980s Harlequin romance, and then suddenly there's a domestic violence subplot. What the heck?!? Anyway...I loved Peg, who reminded me of my Irish grandmother, I liked the cast of characters at the bar it was a decent enough story writing-wise, I just felt confused about what exactly I was reading.
We should all have a mentor like Peg. Whether mother, patient, friend or employer, Peg has a singular focus. Her views can be classified as old fashioned, but there is wisdom in her approach to life. You may find her penance to saints border line superstitious, but you can never question faith.
We all have baggage that we bring into new relationships. What we do with it is pivotal.
Mac/Gerry has emotional scars as well as Anne. One spread himself thinly to avoid commitment, while the other uses anger as a weapon to scare off companionship.
"Love is blind, but your neighbors ain't!" Isn't it amazing how everyone can see an attraction except those involved?
There are several ebbs and flows in this emotional odyssey. Great Read! Leaves you with a tear in your eye at the end.
I chose this book with a light read in mind, with little or no thought of my own put into the process. That isn't what I got, but I surely was not disappointed. Like Peg, who you will dearly love, I grew up with the "St. Anne, St. Anne, bring me a man." prayer. In her golden years, however, Peg was beseeching the St. to find a loving wife for her son with committment issues. Gerry/Mac is a sexy, attractive man who's put his successful career as an architect to run the family Pub when his mother is no longer able to do so. Anne, the home health nurse caring for Peg as she recovers from heart surgery, is a caring woman with serious mistrust issues of men in general. I found her smart mouth and uncontrolled temper annoying, even when the 'explanation' for it was given...but her good heart kept me reading.

The romantic issues of the book are pretty much what's expected from the genre, with a few interesting twists. The religious aspects were presented in a way different than I'd seen before. The characters were strong, well presented, and true to their parts in the story.

What really sets this novel aside from the norm, however, is the delicacy with which a number of personal and interpersional live issues are treated. No spoilers here, but I was impressed with the author's down-to-earth presentation of these issues. Not everyone may understand or agree with the conclusions, but they are still thought-provoking and will not leave the reader unmoved.

I have no hesitation in reccomending the book to anyone. I also hated to see it end.
I heard about this book from a friend and decided to read it for several reasons. It is set in Pittsburgh, my home town and it is about a Catholic girl. I wasn't disappointed. I readily discovered I liked the characters and became wrapped up in the plot.
Anne's long time friendship with Janetta is nicely developed The relationships with her mother, father, sister and brother are very believable. I never lost interest as I read. It was humorous but also covered serious subjects that are much part of today's culture.
At first glance it seems that Gerry is a lost cause for husband material but his redeeming qualities make him a likeable person and this gives hope. There is a cast of supporting characters that fit very nicely into the story.
What I like about Gerry's mother Peg is her child like faith and her stubborn nature. She is the strongest character in the book.
All in all I found this book to be well written and enjoyable. You won't regret the time or the reasonable price spent on this quick and easy read.
